As a Centre of Excellence in Automation and Robotics, our students benefit from cutting-edge resources and unique learning opportunities made possible through special Industry and University partnerships.

Through the Centre of Excellence, we: 

  •  Deliver dynamic and innovative programs that promote the creative application of technology to solve problems
  • Link students to industry and universities to provide experience of how technology is used in practice to benefit people.

Student experiences (7 - 12)

  • Robotics and Electronics projects involving robotic vehicles, robotic arms, drones and automated systems
  • Drone (UAV) Licence course (Years 11 – 12 only) - Certificate III Remote Pilot Licence and Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) Remote Pilot Licence and Aeronautical Radio Operator Certificate
  • Coding of video games, websites and apps
  • Design engineering using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software
  • Advanced production using Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) with 3D printers and Laser cutting and engraving
  • Creating Virtual Reality (VR) content

Industry Links - through Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy (QMEA)

  • School-industry engagement opportunities with companies that rely on STEM-related skills, including Glencore Mount Isa Mines and Hastings-Deering CAT
  • Developing knowledge and skills in automation, robotics and advanced technologies that are desired in industry
  • Industry site visits for first-hand experiences of robotics, drones and automation in action

University Links

  • Access to QUT’s - Australian Centre for Robotic Vison (ACRV); Griffith University’s – Drone Research facility (School of Engineering)
  • Year 11 - 12 students completing the Griffith Engineering and InfoTech programs, equivalent to first-year university subjects

STEM Education Leaders

Centre of Excellence staff are leaders in their field and assist others in STEM education by:

  • Coordinating and hosting the INNOVATE – Redland City STEM Competition, a STEM engagement event open to all primary and secondary schools in Redland City
  • Delivering professional development workshops for teachers from across Queensland
  • Working with Universities to train high calibre future STEM teachers
