The Basketball Academy program aims to improve girl and boy basketball players in Years 7 - 12. Students who are successful in selection into the Basketball Academy will train as separate girl and boy teams, in three program divisions – Introductory (Year 7), Junior (Years 8-9) and Senior (Years 10-12).
Our teams participate in the annual Champion Basketball School of QLD competition, the Southside Premier League throughout the year, plus local gala days. Players can also choose to trial for the Bayside School Sport team.
Students also participate in enrichment programs held throughout the year, including our own Basketball Festival and coaching clinics run by local Basketball QLD club - Red-City Roar and NBL team - Brisbane Bullets.
Program Scheduling
Training sessions occur weekly on scheduled days before, during and after school.
- Years 7 and 8 – students do basketball-focused HPE lessons all year-long, instead of the usual one semester program, and do not study compulsory Creative Arts like other students.
- Year 9 – students do basketball-focused HPE lessons for three terms, followed by a term of compulsory History lessons
- Year 10 (semester one) – students must select Basketball as one of their elective subjects
- Years 11 and 12 – timetables prioritise senior subjects to support post-school goals, so students do not have timetabled basketball lessons. Instead, students complete their team-training during after-school sessions.
Entry Requirements
Students applying for a Basketball Academy placement must demonstrate sporting ability or potential, and must satisfy high standards in behaviour, attendance and academic participation.
Interested students must complete the program application form. If shortlisted, students will be invited to attend a try-out session. Team numbers are limited, to ensure that students get quality playing time.
It is possible to join STEM Academy along with Basketball Academy, but students cannot also be part of either Rugby League or Dance Academy due to conflicting times for lessons and training.
Program Fee & Competition Costs
- Basketball Academy has an annual program fee to pay for: program consumables and specialist training clinics through external providers.
- Students must purchase a training uniform.
- In addition to the annual program fee, there are extra costs for participation in each competition: bus travel, competition registration fees, referee / first-aid hire and health consumables (ice, strapping).
