STEM Academy is a dynamic and innovative enrichment-program for high achieving students in Years 7 to 9. This academically rigorous program is enhanced by cutting-edge resources and unique learning opportunities to extend students beyond what is routinely offered in Science, Technology (Robotics, Coding, Electronics), Engineering (CAD, 3D printing) and Maths classes in secondary schools. STEM Academy students benefit from increased access to the outstanding resources at Education Queensland's only 'Centre of Excellence in Automation and Robotics', including a multi-million dollar Robotics and Design complex.

Program Benefits

  • STEM Academy students participate in enrichment programs and activities including STEM-focused workshops, competitions and industry excursions.

  • Inquiry-based approach to Science with regular laboratory time and an emphasis on hands-on learning

  • Innovative use of Technology – designing and building specialised robots; coding and flying drones; programming robotic arms; creating Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) solutions

  • Cutting-edge Engineering – rapid prototyping using 3D printing and laser technologies

  • Inquiry tasks in Maths that develop critical thinking and collaboration

  • Study Skills workshops to boost academic performance

Program Scheduling

STEM Academy students have shared classes year-long for Science, Mathematics and the 'Alex and Me' wellbeing program for Years 7 to 9.

Technology Classes:

Year 7 - students complete a semester of Digital Technology with a focus on coding and robotics

Year 8 - students complete a semester of Design Technology with a focus on computer modelling and 3D printing

Year 9 – technology subjects are optional with students able to study semester-long electives in Digital and/or Design Technology

Entry Requirements & How to Apply

Entry into the STEM Academy program is by application and an academic merit selection process. Students must demonstrate high achievement in Maths and Science (with an interest in Digital Technology also desirable) and satisfy high standards in effort and behaviour. Places in this academic excellence program are limited.

In addition to STEM Academy, students can also join either Dance Academy or a Sporting Academy, but only one of these due to conflicting times for lessons.
