The Choral Program at Alexandra Hills SHS may include two vocal ensembles – a Choir and a specialist vocal group known as ‘Armonia’. All students from years 7-12 are welcome to be a part of the Choir, with no previous experience or audition necessary. Armonia is an audition-only ensemble that features our finest singers (who must also be part of the Choir). In the past, approximately 60 students were in Choir, with only 12 being accepted into Armonia. Armonia is focussed on producing rich harmonies, and often sings a cappella (with no accompaniment).
Students in the Choral Program work with their director to develop a sound that is pure, polished and strong. As part of the warm-ups done each rehearsal, students are given the opportunity to develop their skills as vocalists, in terms of their range, breath support, vowel production, tone and intonation. Students will also have the opportunity to sing a wide variety of repertoire – everything from traditional choral works to arrangements of modern pop songs. Each song learnt and performed has at least two parts, so students also develop their ability to sing in harmony. In the past, students in Choir and Armonia have sung Africa (by Toto), Fields of Gold (as performed by Eva Cassidy), a range of songs from Glee, Swing Low Sweet Chariot, Set Me As a Seal, Defying Gravity (from the musical, Wicked), Dancing Queen (by ABBA) and Shoshone Love Song to name a few!
Students in the choral program have a lot of fun, and enjoy being part of an inclusive and supportive environment, where music excellence is encouraged
